12. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil 

 

Country: Canada

Tucker and Dale are two working class stiffs just looking for a quiet weekend fishing when their paths cross with a plebeian group of college students. A comedy of errors ensues and few make it out alive. A clever genre parody that manages to be still be original, Tucker and Dale is in a class by itself.

An unworldly small town insurance salesman (Ed Helms) travels to Cedar Rapids for a sales conference, where he is rudely awakened to the unpleasant realities of business and love. Rapids teaches us that when life gets complicated, sticking to your principles is more important than ever.

Upon release from jail for selling weed to a uniformed police officer, lovable simpleton Ned (Paul Rudd) becomes a transient mooch on his family. Through his naiveté and unwitting honesty, he transforms the lives of his three very different sisters by reminding them that intelligence and sophistication do not equal happiness.

Two emotionally addled 15-year-olds try their best to form a stable, loving relationship admist chaos at school and at home. Brilliantly written and directed by Richard Ayoade  Submarine reminds us that when we try to use eachother as lifeboats, we both sink.

A successful but unhappy screenwriter (Owen Wilson) travels to Paris with his financé. His unexpected journey though the enchanted city's past and present lends him inspiration for his novel, and his life.

Depressed  ex-pastry chef Annie Walker (Kirsten Wig) struggles to plan her close friend's wedding while dealing with the loss of her own relationship and her business. In the end she finds that being a good friend often means learning to accept yourself.

A rich disabled socialite and a young man from a notorious Parisian banlieue form an unlikely friendship which challenges them both to face their greatest fears. Sweet but never saccharine, Intouchables manages to bridge France's most enduring social gap with humor.
