MSNBC’s Chris Hayes: ‘Veterans Day Makes Me Sick’

Nov 11, 2013

Chris-Hayes-screenshotMSNBC host Chris Hayes is under fire today after claiming he is personally disgusted by Veterans Day.

During a segment on Morning Joe this morning the bespectacled pundit shocked hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough with his unorthodox views on the holiday, which he sees as a celebration of the military-industrial complex.

"I don't know about you, but Veterans Day makes me sick," he told the panel. "It's just such a jingoistic, macho display of violence and power. I saw a parade while biking to work this morning and I literally felt like vomiting.

"All these little children were lined up with little American flags. I couldn't help but feel we are just brainwashing them into thinking that violent conflict is somehow the answer to our problems as a nation.

"I mean besides defeating Nazism, ending the Holocaust, stopping genocide in Kosovo, protecting global trade from piracy, ending communism, ending slavery, securing our independence, killing Osama Bin Laden and distributing aid abroad after natural disasters, what have American armed forces ever done for this country?"

Bake for Freedom

Veterans Day was established by president Woodrow Wilson in 1919 to commemorate the end of the First World War. Initially known as Armistice Day, Congress changed the name in 1954 and broadened its scope to include honoring all veterans.

The holiday has never been controversial, and has thus far largely remained outside the bounds of partisan politics. Joe Scarborough felt compelled to defend this tradition this morning.

"I mean these people are heroes," he scolded. "These men and women go out there and risk their lives so that you and I can breathe freedom. They go to the ends of the Earth to fight our enemies while you're sleeping comfortably at home.

"The deployments puts strain on their personal lives, on their marriages, on their health ... And they do it all for you. All so you can sleep soundly at night. How can you be against a holiday that honors their sacrifices? I mean really."

"Joe, soldiers aren't heroes," Hayes retorted. "You want to know who the real heroes are? The real heroes are people like my friend Chaz. Chaz owns a vegan bakery in Williamsburg. Before he opened his small business there were only 11 other vegan bakeries in the area, and only 4 were 100 percent gluten free. But none were non-GMO.

"Chaz's bakery has finally brought non-GMO vegan baked goods to people who need them. He's bringing little morsels of happiness and light into people's lives. What soldier has ever done anything like that? You don't need bullets to make a difference."

This isn't the first time Hayes has refused to use to term "heroes" with regard to American armed forces personnel. In May of 2012 he told his audience that the term made him feel "uncomfortable." He was forced to apologize within days after conservative blogs picked up the story.

This time, however, it appears Hayes won't be backing down.

"I don't care what they do to me," he claims. "Fire me for all I care. I'm gonna keep speaking the truth."

As a two-tour veteran of overseas military duties Hayes’ opinions do not bother me. Some of what he says makes sense. For an opinion by a Medal of Honor awarded Marine Corps general please do a search for “War is a Racket.”

Honor the troops for their sacrifices and efforts but growl in anger at the vile vermin who too often send troops overseas for reasons to often intended to keep USA elites and corporations in wealth and power.

  • Rusty McIntosh

You’re welcome young man, for the right of free speech that we have bought and paid for with our sacrifice. God bless you.

  • JqOgershok

You have the right to say such stupid things because better men and women protected your rights. That should not stop your employer from dismissing you for such insensitive statements. Veterans are a protected class.

  • LookSheeple

Chris Hayes is a rich white liberal. What else needs to be said? This is typical talk of a 1%er. Chris Hayes is an extremely insensitive radical thinking individual. His comments do not bother me because there will always be a group of individuals who think they are better than the working class, and will always put them down. It is just the way it has been for a long time.

Let his ratings do the talking for him.

  • CptWilJnz

    total bullshit, nice on troll!!!

  • RJ Teen

you need to be deported…go some where else to live …maybe then you will see what the military do for you …..men and women have died so you could have the freedom to say what you just said …….UGH !!

  • Chris

    What a Tool.

  • veteran

i want him lit on fire, what have we done?!?!?!?! got rid of a dictator in iraq oh and during my service i have a jacked up back and knees now, i cant throw a ball with my son or get on the floor to play with him without my wifes help, but please by all means, the vegan guy who SELLS food what a F’N hero that guy is, not like hes giving it away. And oh forget that most services promote community service so i guess what im asking is what this guy does for the community.

  • fabeer

DITTO to all remarks below that define Mr. Hayes as a privileged ignoramus. He obviously doesn’t have a clue, andt he has the right to open his mouth and let the rest of us know that for certain.

  • abner68

Chris Hayes is a jerk for sure…but you volunteered to have your back and knees jacked up by signing up….and doing your job, that which you get paid for, does not make you a hero…just sayin’…

  • Jello

He’s not trolling. He is saying- praise the soldier, but not necessarily the political elite who determine our military’s course of action.

  • Chris Pawley

I think someone should take him out to Iraq to see first hand what soldiers endure on a daily basis…..Or just drop him off in Afghanistan alone for a week.

  • SFC Gorby US Army

Idioligy and rhedoric such as is this is why…….
    I am an American Soldier.
I am a warrior and a member of a team.
I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army Values.
I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade.
I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills.
I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy, the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.
I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.
    I am an American Soldier.

  • Daniel Morgan

When ‘arf of your bullets fly wide in the ditch,
    Don’t call your Martini a cross-eyed old bitch;
She’s human as you are — you treat her as sich,
An’ she’ll fight for the young British soldier.
Fight, fight, fight for the soldier . . .

When shakin’ their bustles like ladies so fine,
The guns o’ the enemy wheel into line,
Shoot low at the limbers an’ don’t mind the shine,
For noise never startles the soldier.
Start-, start-, startles the soldier . . .

If your officer’s dead and the sergeants look white,
Remember it’s ruin to run from a fight:
So take open order, lie down, and sit tight,
And wait for supports like a soldier.
    Wait, wait, wait like a soldier . . .

When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An’ go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
    So-oldier ~of~ the Queen!

I care not for his opinion, he has neither earned the right to speak with the adults nor the stones to speak with the Soldiers!

  • RaveFlyz

Really…I got toward the end and he talks about his real hero. I hope this guy gets jumped in an alley. Did he grow up in a playpen? Jesus.

  • Sean Murphy

Opening a bakery is heroic? At what great risk did this man open his vegan bakery? IN WILLIAMSBURG. I’d like to hear his definitions of heroism and personal risk.

  • Zedsdead

Please……………….tell me these morons posting are not allowed to vote.

  • currantisaraisin

As a Vegan I completely understand what he means. YOU people just don’t understand what it’s like being judged for your dietary choices. Living every day as a social pariah is not easy, and opening a Vegan bakery in spite of that takes real courage, a hero’s courage!

  • Chris Good

And the truth is your career is finished! Good job bud. Just because you dont support the wars doesnt mean you shouldnt support the troops.

  • Chris Good

Nah. Thats called Supply and Demand. If you have a Market for it, then you sell it.

  • Chris Good

Oh and if it wasnt for those troops you wouldnt be able to live in your little “utopia”

  • Chris Good

oh and while im on it, one other little tidbit. yes we are judged by our daily caloric intake. Just because you want to eat nothing but veggies and fruit thats fine. thats YOUR CHOICE and yes FISH AND SHELLFISH ARE MEAT! SO ARE EGGS!

  • Virginia Titterington

When my husband went in, he was paid less per month than my job as a nursing assistant (which was minimum wage). Throughout his career, he was paid so poorly that we qualified for food stamps (which we never took, as we did not believe in taking them). The benefits he was promised were stripped away by politician after politician. My husband is 60% disabled due to his military injuries, but he still works a full time job now as we could never live on the pittance they give for disability (which is subtracted from his retirement pay). My husband’s family has served their country since they came to this country just before World War !. His grandfather served in World War I, his uncle died at age 19 in World War II, his father served in Korea twice and then in Vietnam. My husband served through the first Gulf War (as did his brother) and my son served in Kosovo. These men put their lives on the line every day for love of country. When I went to work every day, I did not have people shooting at me and planting land mines where I walked. Me going to work for pay does not make me a hero. The men in my family laying their life on the line for the love of their country does indeed make them heroes.

  • chuck_fu

“I mean besides defeating Nazism, ending the Holocaust, stopping genocide in Kosovo, protecting global trade from piracy, ending communism, ending slavery, securing our independence, killing Osama Bin Laden and distributing aid abroad after natural disasters, what have American armed forces ever done for this country?”

Well you moron you just named a few of the many sacrifices that our military has accomplished. Maybe you should bone up on why we HAVE a military and take into consideration the Revolutionary War unless you want to be non “jingoistic” and go kiss the Queens bum. BTW ever been through boot camp pretty boy? God I would love to be an NCO that kicks the snot out of you’re stupid millennial behind. So be a MAN and join so you can put some facts into your limp dcik nonsense. God what a dipsihit.(sic)

  • Bullmoose321

THIS CLOWN IS A USELESS PIECE OF EXCREMENT WHO HAS NO CLUE WHERE HIS FREEDOMS COME FROM.

  • Tony Rozensky

This guy is a major asshole.

  • RVDUSA

Chris Hayes needs to open a good Vegan Bakery in Kabul! Bring a flax vest infedel!

  • Timothy Comitalo

He doesn’t need to be fired. What he needs is to be fired on!

  • Brian

@Chris Good Vegans don’t eat fish, shellfish or eggs so I’m not sure what your point is there. They avoid all animal products.”currentisaraisin” was making a comment on veganism and not our veterans. So calm down, sir.

But as a society, it seems different groups (vegans included) seem to have a persecution complex. Guess what, there are more than 7 billion people on this planet. That is 7 billion individual personalities and we are going to have differences of opinion! So live your life and move on.

As a liberal (Green, not Democrat) vegan I still support the efforts for the troops and our veterans. I have very close family members and friends who have served their country proudly.

But we also have to remember there are those who choose to serve and those who have no choice left to serve. I’m talking about people who are “screw ups” in life that are left no other option than to join the military in order to be a productive member of society. I think it would be unfair to call the later group “heroes.” But the former group I would call “heroes.” It is all about context and there are many grey areas in this life. It is not about black and white or red and blue states.

And also remember a lot of the “freedom” that we have is an illusion. As a great man once said, “what we have is a temporary list of privileges. there are no rights if they can just take them away from you. if you want to know about your precious rights Google ‘Japanese Americans’ 1942.” As history proves, no form of government or “freedom” lasts forever. It eventually collapses.

  • Loralee Scott

Not only should he be immediately fired, let’s send him to Afghanistan or better yet, Pakistan and see if his vegan bakery idea is a hit with the Taliban. Such pompous, arrogant, offensive ignorance that he can afford to spew only because men and women are risking their lives to give him that luxury.

  • Brian

You guys do know this is a fictional news site right?

  • Veterano

My only problem with Veterans Day is that there’s no laws giving Vets the day off to go with it!! It really chaps my hide when I have to work that day but bankers don’t.

  • Gunny2862

Note: The Daily Currant is a Satire site. That said, Chris Hayes is still a tool. Carry on.

  • Ranger Doc

For those of us that served this great nation in conflicts around this globe, you are welcome for being able to say what you want. If those in uniform did not serve for our rights, you would be on the way to a work camp, prison or worse you would be executed for your beliefs……. Rangers Lead the Way..

  • Patriot02

Well if it’s so easy why don’t you sign up and do it for awhile?

  • chris

I agree with your point, but to feel the need to mention he is “white” brings me suspicions of “your” comments. You dont think there are idiot Liberal Blacks? Are you kidding me, blacks are almost exclusively Democrats. Agree with your point, but no need to mention his skin color, …..from a retired WHITE Marine!

  • bmp

so…everyone understands that this website is satire, right?

  • TheJohnykat

It appears nobody gets that. Nation of morons.

  • cerpas

God bless you and your family of warriors. Semper Fi

  • Phillip

The quotation marks written in this article don’t make sense. Did this guy only speak the first paragraph or also the second one? If just the first, he is an asshole. If the first AND second, he is a very good SATIREST. Semper Fi.

  • Phil Wojtalewicz

Here’s the truth as well…..hayes is a douchebag.

  • Rudy Rios

This guy is 10 lbs of selfish in a 5 lbs sack,

  • None

Many conservatives have lost their jobs for stupid remarks. I hope he will find himself unemployed.

  • SandyIam

Chuck…..that was sarcasm. The paragraph was proving your point.

  • RJB

Chaz’s vegan bakery exists thanks to the sacrifices of soldiers and their families over the decades. This is someone who simply doesn’t understand what the military does.

  • Dandy Don Elder

Well Chris you make me SICK, if you were alive in the 60s you would of been a draft dodger maybe.

  • Chris Good

I did not know that. well thankfully i didnt get to puffy on my early post. now i know. Semper Fi Gunny.

  • abner68

First, I’m too old to enlist….had the draft been going on
when I was younger, I would have done my duty…but it wasn’t and I had no
interest in making the military my “job”…does that make me an inferior human
being? I really get sick of hearing, “Look what I did for you, I joined the
military because you wouldn’t…so I’m a better person than you” crap. Second, no
one said it was easy…there are other vocations equally as hazardous though, and
anyone who volunteers for the military knows (or should know) full well what
the military is for and that they might be deployed to a combat zone….if you
volunteer for something, knowing the implications, then I have little sympathy
    for you.

  • Chris Hayes is a douche

    1%er

  • Tim

As a former military man myself I do appreciate Veteran’s Day. That being said I don’t currently support the Government elite who keeps using our military to fight wars for their political or financial gain. The military is now used as mercenaries. You want to truly support our military then vote out the egotistical, greedy idiots in our government.

  • Onetimevisitor

This is the worst satire I have ever read. Look at the comments below. These people are ready to go beat up this poor man because you write lousy satire. You need to go back to school and learn what real satire is about. This is just bait for people who don’t know any better.

  • Maureen Frusha-Boutwell

Yes, he can speak his opinion in English and not German or Japanese because of the heroes he refuses to acknowledge.

  • Joseph M. Tersigni

The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide – now including South Sudan.

Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence – which presses forward.

    Q. Are your news stories real?

    A. No. Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world

  • NOBODY

The comments that were made doesn’t really bother me. People will say whatever they want against the military. Some people will express their opinions towards an individual or group. God bless you Mr Hayes and I pray that you, your son, your daughter, or whoever are close to you do not have to pick up a rifle and defend this nation. For the people who are fighting, will be fighting, and fought all i can say is that KEEP UP THE FIGHT, FOR OUR GRATEFUL NATION THANKS YOU.

  • deadhead

You suck, you little pencil necked geek.

  • James McEnanly

Was anyone trying to kill Chaz for opening his vegan bakery? Would the world be any less safe without a gluten-free, non-GMO organic Vegan bakery? side from the possibility of losing one’s investment, I do not see much heroism

  • Guest

Peopel… The Daily Currant is nothing more than a bunch of chuckleheads who think it’s funny to lie, and get people to react. It would be kinda funny if it weren’t so sophomoric. No, juvenile works better.

  • Jon

We should have a “wow we really fucked up in x, y and z conflict” day. I’m thinking Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam.

  • Jen

    Hes white rich trash.

  • cd

Gluten free bakers are your heroes? Go crawl into a donut hole.

  • Mark

sounds to me like someone needs to enlist and repay his country for all it has given him…bet after one Air Force deployment (3 months) and he will be asking for a national holiday

  • Mark

So unless FORCED to do something for the greater good you won’t…that is what I hear. I don’t see anyone on here looking for sympathy…just respect for taken the road less traveled.

  • Patti Jack

This is why I think everyone should at leash 2 years in the military so there is more than 1% that really understand what Veterans Day is all about

  • Trevor

Go to an amputee ward and tell them they aren’t heroes, or talk to the parents of a son who was killed at 19 and tell them he wasn’t a hero. Almost every job offers some sort of workers comp, who are you to down play anything a service member has done? Soldiers volunteered for WWII does that mean only the draftees are heroes? Please grow a pair and find it in your heart kill yourself as soon as possible. Sincerely, a combat vet.

  • Trevor

    What’s your solution to Afghanistan??

  • Kelly

POS…Go back to where you came from…vegan bakery? Really!

  • David Tamburovic

I saw a parade in Long Beach CA that Chris Hayes was a part of and it almost made me vomit.

  • Kelly

Morning Joe has lost a loyal fan unless this idiot is gone. I am sure I am not the only one to say so. He doesn’t seem to care what they do to him so it shouldn’t be a problem. Just sayn’…..

  • Jac Looch

I see myself as an “Average Joe.” I’m a disabled Vet. My daughter is a veteran. All the noise you have made only makes one thing clear: My daughter has a bigger pair than you do. When you “literally felt like vomiting,” that was just a symptom of you Guinness record cowardice.

  • ONTUme

Who’s truth is he speaking???? would it be the 20 year old that threw himself on a concussion grenade to save his fellow service men and women????? Would it be the young people enslaved by their countries so called Armies, used for their pleasure no matter if they are male or female………. This guy needs a bullet or better yet send him to Syria to live so we Americans, that love and appreciate our Military Service Men and Women, do all we can to show them just how much.

  • Michael Bicanovsky

They aren’t really defending freedom. When has our freedom ever been in jeopardy except in the case of the Revolutionary War? Vietnam War didn’t threaten our freedom. World War One didn’t threaten our freedom. They would’ve left us alone in WWII if we didn’t provoke Japan with embargoes and false flag attacks.

Our freedom is already gone. Our government is taking it away one update at a time.

  • abner68

    Kill myself?…really?…go f**k yourself…sincerely, someone who doesn’t a give sh*t that you were a combat vet.

  • abner68

The greater good died with WWII and so did the respect for the military establishment.

  • Peccavi

    disgusting.

  • Guest

You have the right to say what you want, but you should seriously pick you words a lot better. What has the military done (I mean besides those life altering and awesome things you named off)? Here’s one for you. EVERY piece of modern technology came from military research. Radar used to guide planes around the skies, military. Advances in modern medicine, military. If you wanna get technical, the Nazis should get most of that credit. Even though it was horrible what they did, they documented everything and it is used for the basis of modern day surgeries. Chris Hayes, shoot me a message with some piece of technology you use today and I’ll give you where it originated from…the military. THAT’S what your military has done outside of those AWESOME things you spoke of.

  • MSLSD

Chris Hayes, you are so far gone, you don’t even know what a disrespectful slob you really are.

  • Obama Bush

I love how so many of you don’t realize this website is satire. Getting all worked up over a fake news story.

  • Trevor

Please define the word “Hero” as you know it, you old outdated decrepit ball sack….

  • salinetb

This clown is able to say this because we veterans have served in all of the services. I almost pity this pig. Not one ounce of gratitude to the people who have served to make his freedom of speech possible. What scum!

  • Jason Stenzel

You Sir make me sick! How dare you try to spin a day of recognition and remembrance into some crybaby mumbo jumbo about brain washing children! It’s call respect….try it sometime, Douche canoe!

  • JD

Abner, you have no right as far as I’m concerned to weigh in on what a hero is considering your obvious lack of concern for those that have in the past and still to this day (myself included) do to ensure your God given rights and freedoms stay at your disposal. Personally I don’t care if you like the military personnel or not, but at least have the human decency to keep your damn mouth shut if you can’t find something nice to say to or about us. No one should judge you on your decision to not join the military, it’s not for everyone. But how dare you pass judgment on those of us who did choose to join. We chose to join for our own reasons, not yours. We did not join for your judgment. As for someone telling you that they are better than you for having served (which I doubt actually happened) if it did happen I’m sorry. Apparently that person has the ability to control your emotions of a man who is apparently old enough to not be able to join the military. It must be hard being an adult and not being able to control your emotions from someones “mean words”. Good luck in the real world.

  • abner68

Find a dictionary and see what you “think” applies to your situation…

  • Michael B

His stupid little comments happened on MSNBC so it really shouldn’t be a big shock to anyone. After all, they are the home base for all wacky libtards of the universe….the Jerry Springer show has more journalistic integrity than the hosts on that network.

  • Billy Stubbs

No one is asking for sympathy but respect! And I’m glad you said something about the draft. Those men and women who were drafted didn’t have a choice and many gave theirs lives to defend freedom and a way of life that it seems many don’t appreciate. I served and now I’m in Law Enforcement. and I don’t do it because of money or a pat on the back, but the desire to help people that can’t defend themselves.

  • Trevor

Pretty sure I asked you but, since you are incapable of defining a simple word I’ll do it for you. A HERO is someone who stands up for what is right while others choose to sit and do nothing. A HERO is selfless never thinking about himself/herself but the good of others. A HERO has integrity, honor and respect. Service members, firefighters, police, nurses, doctors, anyone with good in their heart and a will to make a difference no matter how small. It doesn’t have to be one of the professions listed above, it can be anyone with the will to make a difference and impact others in a positive way. I’m a combat medic, but not a hero, as I lack the respect trait for you and your opinions. Now please go kill yourself……

  • AP

If you can’t get behind our military, feel free to get in front of them.

  • Micah Burns

Until Chris Hayes picks up a rifle, serves in a combat zone or defends freedom and sees what it means to help protect freedom, then he will forever be just a citizen that enjoys the protection that others provide…..a liberal parasite that wants to blather to others what his viewpoint is without ever doing the real dirt work to be an American. Only 7% of the population ever serves in the military, while 93% gets to enjoy the freedom. The sacrifices that military members and their families endure for America, for the people and for the nation to enjoy freedom, liberty and the ability to speak however they chose…..well the military members know what it means and why they do what they do…..liberals on the other hand….they have vegan bakeries to worry about.

  • abner68

Impressive that you found a dictionary…but, again, since you insist I must kill myself, I too must insist that you go f**k yourself…

  • abner68

“still to this day (myself included) do to ensure your God given rights and freedoms stay at your disposal.” <—— This is what I was I bitching about in my response to Patriot02…the whole mentality from many of today’s military personnel of “Look what I did for you, I joined the military because you wouldn’t…so I’m a better person than you and you wouldn’t have ANY freedoms if it weren’t for my sacrifice of voluntarily enlisting in the military” (and yes, I did hear this from a facebook friend recently)….what an untrue load of sh*t…freedom was fought for and won long before any of us were born, by my men like my grandfathers who served in WWII. Neither of them were ever so blatantly pompous towards civilians.

  • Kristopher Tiberius Haven

$1 to the first person who puts a bullet in this piece of trashes head… that’s all he’s worth… not even worth the price of a single free bullet to the head… someone has to pay to replace that bullet.

  • Joshua Proper

Why don’t you ask the good people of Thailand the United States Marine Corps deployed to for humanitarian assistance after the horrific Tsunami hit in 2004. You know the people who were there first, before the UN, before any other nation. Ask those people who were provided food and shelter and assistance sorting out the pieces of their lives ripped apart by the Tsunami. Ask them if they think the Marines are heroes. This is just one example of the thousands of humanitarian operations our U.S. Armed Forces have been apart of without any violence required. This is besides the countless conflicts we’ve assisted in or the wars we have fought. If that isn’t good enough for you, well you really don’t deserve freedom.

  • Joshua Proper

Is this a joke? Show us military guys one example of a veteran saying “look what I did for you, I joined the military because you wouldn’t… so I’m a better person than you” and the rest of us will take care of them. That isn’t something that is taught or ever considered honorable, I highly doubt that you have ever had a Veteran say it to you. Maybe, just maybe you feel inferior yourself, or the people in your community have respect for Veterans and show their appreciation often. You are absolutely right that when we sign up we know what we are getting ourselves into, but we do it anyway because we are proud of our country and understand there is a cost to freedom – a price we are willing to pay. Do I feel like I’m a Hero? No, I don’t… and I honestly think the vast majority of veterans don’t think of themselves as heroes either, however it is a sign of respect that people give them/us.

  • Scott Hartman

This is the Filthy ……Progressive ……Disease that is slowly destroying this country. No red-blooded patriot conservative would espouse these thoughts or voice this vial garbage. If I read tomorrow on the news, that him and his Vegan butt-buddy choked to death sharing one of their gluten-free sandwiches, I wouldn’t loose a seconds worth of sleep.

  • TAYLOR

You think what they scrafice is covered my that small Salary? You think that small salary is why they do it? Really? Some people have a call to serve to do some thing bigger than themselves’ to make a difference, and that makes them a hero! As for the jacked up back, knees, loss of limbs, how about we pay vets what we pay football players! Because as an ex military dependent, I can promise you the whole family isacrifices for their solders service, the family knows it is a privilege to have a hero among you and them.

All liberals should be dropped in Iraq, afghan, Pakistan for a month. Let’s see how they feel with a dose of reality. If their big mouths don’t get them shot before the month is up!

  • Katie Lauren Rage

So, if the military were to put down our weapons and take up vegan baking, would “little morsels of happiness and light” help defend us against countries when they tried to invade us?

  • BettyWhite0321

It makes me smile just thinking about how ,whether he realizes it or not, he just pissed off the people that will be preparing his food, working on his car, delivering his mail, driving that squad in the rear view etc. for the rest of his life !!!

  • https://www.facebook.com/duke.mantee.77 Duke Mantee

He’s also a poser. “I saw a parade while biking to work this morning …” Really? He made a point of telling everyone how “green” he is while making a statement disparaging veterans by telling us he rides a bicycle to work. And just how did that little fact enhance his “Veteran’s Day makes me vomit” argument? It doesn’t. Unless he was trying to point out that he thinks he’s better than everyone because he’s green.

  • stephanie

I believe in the holiday but as a person part of the food service industry… I experienced something that greatly surprised me. I earn a living off my tips. I make 2.13 an hour plus tips at a restaurant. This veterans day, we offered free meals to vets so we were extremely busy. The vets that I waited on acted like They were entitled to anything they wanted and treated the wait staff badly. It left a sour taste in my mouth. I barely made any money that night because tips were so low. I don’t care who you are, everyone should be treating people with respect.

  • John Dossett

What is his address? That communist piece of scum needs to be arrested as an enemy of the state. Perfect example of LIBERAL TRASH

  • Guest

So, obbop, you’re saying that every time I see a child waving a flag I should vomit? His argument linked “little children lined up with little American flags” with “brainwashing them into thinking that violent conflict is somehow the answer to our problems as a nation,” with no logical connection between the two. The children may or may not in fact be brainwashed, however, I’m quite sure that holding a little flag is probably not the cause.

  • Vikki Araiza

Then fire him already, since he doesn’t care. Hipster scum are not a protected class; but veterans are.

7 comments and 10 votes means abner68 is a TROLL.

No, are not speaking the truth, you are speaking your “Feelings”. Do something really radical, commit Journalism. No feeling, viewpoints, or other garbage. Just the facts and the truth.

  • Shocked3

It amazes me how stupid some people in this country really are. Thanks to those Veterans for affording this tool the ability to speak his mind so freely. It is people like this I wish would get the ability to see what life would be like with the freedoms that our military provides us. continue to eat your vegan/gluten free biscuit while riding your bike you Idiot.

From the ABOUT page of this website:

The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide – now including South Sudan.

Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence – which presses forward.

    Q. Are your news stories real?

    A. No. Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world

  • Michael Flint

remember because you were too scared to sign the check for your life does not give you the RIGHT to bash those of us that are and have written that check. You will never get it and never understand how we feel because you have never been willing to find out.

  • Doug Charette

Yet another low information voter. He’s welcome to his opinion, and I’m glad I spent 20 years defending his right to open his mouth and prove he’s an idiot. He should be in Congress, he’d fit right in.

  • disqus_KXtQ1XK7i8

Wow. As A Veteran who risked my life in the war on terror I am floored but not really surprised to hear this kind of thing from someone who never served ANYBODY!

  • mkshead

I think he’s mad at the politicians, lobbyist, and war profiteers, but the guys in the parades and the average service member are just the people doing or did their duty. Their being recognized 2 days of the year (Memorial & Veterans Day) for all they gave to keep this country free and safe. I get together every
Veterans Day with the guys from the last unit I served in. We look forward to that day just about like Christmas. How can that be so disgusting? I think Chris Hayes need to pull back and really think about who he is mad at, and thank God he lives in a country where men and women got out to protect his right to stick his foot in his mouth! Go 4th Infantry Division!!

  • Jessica Sanchez

Considering this is a made up article, as in “fictional”, what does that say to your intelligence… or should I say…. how a “useless piece of excrement” is more intelligent than you are? Just sayin.

  • Jessica Sanchez

No stupid, the story is made up, kinda like the tea baggers’ love for this country.

  • Jessica Sanchez

And since you “have no clue” that this story is not true, what does that say about you?

  • smdh

perhaps that is why they call it Veterans day not Military appreciation day….

  • chazmanr

Are you even remotely aware that you are commenting on satirical website?

  • a_veteran_01

Did the difference between “truth” and “one jackass’s f’ed up opinion” change when I wasn’t looking?

  • Jessica Sanchez

Why is it only tea bagger types believe that this website is a news site? Has Fox News infected their brains this much? Yo, rightees, this is a satire website. “Satire” is not necessarily the truth. You can’t fix stupid.

  • another veteran

If MSNBC doesn’t fire him, we all should change channels. Tell the
sponsors of his show to cancel or we will quit buying their products.
Sometimes people say things just to get attention. The only other
network that would take a chance on him is Al Jazeera. TaLK ABOUT SATIRE: Is anyone sure
    he isn’t Rachel Maddow?

  • Jello

I don’t think that is WHY they call it Veterans day. But that is certainly a good point as to why Chris Hayes was inappropriate. Good observation.

  • Rookrook

    Are

  • Rookrook

Are you people aware that this is a satirical website and none of this actually happened?? They are just poking fun at Chris Hayes for being liberal. I just scrolled down in the comments hoping to find something funny but I’m very disturbed that so many of you actually think this is a real story about things that Hayes actually said. You people frighten me

  • Rookrook

And your humble and not self righteous in the least. This is a satirical news story you blowhard. As in none of it it ever happened or was said and was just made up for laughs.

  • abner68

Yet again, someone pointing out how much better a person they are than me for enlisting or “writing that check” as you called it and assuming that I wasn’t “willing” or was too “scared” to join the military…whatever….just keep patting yourself on the back…oh, and thanks for reiterating my earlier point…

  • Opinionated Friend

You my Sir are a gargantuan schlemiel, who lives in a minuscule world which revolves around an incompetent leech (you). Air-suckers such as yourself only ingurgitate the sacrifices of dog-tag adorned heroes who strive to keep America the land of the free since it is and will always remain the home of the brave. Do not fear Mr Hayes, ruler of all American dullards, the brave HEROES that all intelligent life forms call veterans surely did not give it all for you. They sacrificed everything of value in this secular world for people who will actually make a positive impact upon this fine establishment titled America (or maybe even the world). So sleep well knowing that 99% of the civilized world who knows the vomit that has ejaculated from your face-hole is disgusted by your name.

    Count your blessings.

  • Patricia Taylor

How is this satire? It’s how Hayes really thinks.

  • Vince Piraino

Where is the video of him saying this, I am looking all over and can’t find it. Can someone send me a link so I can see it coming out of his mouth?

  • jthampt

You’ve watched A Few Good Men one too many times.

  • Ken Swan

What he fails to realize is that it is all those HEROS that fight for HIS RIGHT to say this garbage

  • Robin Wilson

To answer your question Chris Hayes, our American Armed Forces have and continue to fought all over the world to protect the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights, that is what they have done for this country! Chris, because of the honor, sacrifice, and dedication of our Armed Forces, you have the privilege to exercise freedom of the speech, despite how mis-guided and cruel your opinions are. If you don’t like it here in America, its a very simple solution, pack up and move! Comparing a baker to a solder is degrading, you should be ashamed and embarrassed.

  • atxfireman

What a douche! I’m betting Chaz at the vegan bakery doesn’t appreciate being used as an example in this guy’s commentary.

  • TokenGimp

His 1st amendment right fought for by Vets might get his butt kicked.
    I can say I wouldn’t stop anyone.

  • MichaelG23

Good then when someone runs him and his bike over it will be looked at as rodent control.

  • bry

What trash. Maybe one day you can go to a veteran hospital , take the place of a homeless vet, live a day in their shoes. Then just maybe you culd look at them in the eye and tell them you cant call them heroes. Go live a single day in the life of a soldier. Your comments are ignorant trash and just because you do not agree with the holiday does not mean you should not give people the respect they deserve. and P.S, go thank a vet for your ability to say what you want because you obviously did not earn it yourself.

  • Ed_Stark

Well, when you’re a spoiled little snot with no real life experiences to speak of, you have to make up some outlandish garbage to say so people will listen to you.

What an irrelevant turd. Him and whoever likes him, all just meaningless husks where human beings used to be. Just ignore them, they make no impact on the world.

  • Pete

thinks this pansy needs a punch…from a girl. Does he not know the military protects his friend’s precious vegan bakery?

  • Ron Hawkins

These comments are just sad. This is a satirical website. None of the articles are real. Not even “Nancy Grace Arrested for Murder” or “Pope Benedict Comes Out as Gay.”

  • TheManInBlack

This guy needs to get a clue and a heart. He should be glad that the men and women in service who protect the Constitution and enter in harms way to allow him the opportunity to slander and dishonor them . I hope your career was worth your distasteful and unfounded opinion . Maybe a little time away from the limelight would put things into perspective and allow him time to reflect and make amends .

  • James Cudse

  • sickofmichaelmoore

Seriously? He asked for it? That’s so intelligent. I wonder if YOU would stand up and protect this country? I would have to say no after reading that statement.

  • sickofmichaelmoore

Yes, you are an inferior human being. That’s coming from a military mom and you are not worthy of cleaning my sons boots.

  • Jack

This is a satire website . Look up “satire”, JqOgershock. Chris Hayes didn’t say any of that stuff . It’s all joke that you fell for.

  • Gets it

DOES ANYONE GET THAT THIS IS A JOKE? HELLO? None of this actually happened. It is a satire piece. Total fiction! None of this stuff was ever said. It is meant to be funny. HELLO?

  • American soldier – retired

Idiot @$$ #0!e, blissfully ignorant….nothing else needs to be said.

  • Rodacious ThreeStacks

Well smart guy, since your friend is such a great person for making food that you like, let me tell you what I did in the military. I was a Combat Medical Specialist. I went on numerous Humanitarian Aid missions-Hurricane Mitch reilef in El Salvador, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita relief in the United States. I worked in numerous VA medical centers. I have never fought anyone while I wore a uniform. We have built hospitals, school and roads in El Salvador as I worked as medical support. There are thousands of soldiers that do what I did. None of us have fought anyone. We increase respect for America by helping others. Our motto was-Born to kill, but trained to heal. People like you are the reason I stopped wearing the uniform. Why should we risk our lives to protect people like you? The good thing about being an American is-eventhough you say stupid things and don’t appreciate those that help you, you can still reap the benefits.

  • De Gosh Reed

Thank you for your candor, I like people who are honest with how they feel. Now if you don’t want that freedom leave it on your plate and leave the table your brothers and sisters would love to have your leftovers.

  • Yojimbo556
  • Captain America’s Wife

“The Daily Currant” is a satirical web site.

  • Angela Grimes

As a veteran, you sir make me sad. I have served this country for the last 10 years and I feel proud of what I have done. I am a Combat Medic and all I had ever done was help Soldiers that were in their most desperate hour get home to their families. Unfortunately, not all of them were able to make it home alive. We put them on a Hero flight… YES a HERO flight. Those soldiers gave their lives. They will never be able to eat one of your friends vegan treats. I cannot believe that you could be so bold as to compare a person who opens a vegan restaurant to a Soldier defending this country. You are welcome Sir, from the whole of Military Service. You are welcome to have your opinion, but please know who to be grateful to for it. It is every man or woman that has ever raised their right hand and sacrificed for this country, not you gluten-free friend.

  • SHOTGUN285

ok, so some innocent bystander that runs into a burning house to save someone, knowing full well he could get burned alive, is no hero because he willingly put himself in danger and was willing to sacrifice his life or safety in order to help save another stranger, you’re saying that guy is no hero? That if he gets burned alive well too damn bad because he knew there was a fire there? Admit it, you’re just a gutless coward that lives under the protection of better men (and women) than yourself, and that fact gnaws at you every day of your pathetic existence. Thank God I don’t have to live your life, I spent 12 years in the Marines and I never have to look in the mirror and wonder if I’ve done enough to protect my family and my country. Too bad you can’t say that!

  • WilSpeaking

If we sent him a Hero Sandwich on whole wheat would he complain we were trying to poison him?
Also does being a vegan affect brain cells or does he just does not know history? American armed forces have been protecting our country and her citizens for over 200 years, not just from World War II. Before someone jumps in, yes initially they were militias before they were a standing military but they were still American armed forces.

  • jack_k1

I bet there’s a job at the bakery he could have.

  • Ron Hawkins

To 95 percent of the commenters: Why, after a lifetime of hearing, “Don’t believe everything you read,” do you believe everything you read? More specifically, why would you think that an article that has clear hints of satire – and is surrounded by stories that are even more obviously satirical – is true? And even if you didn’t recognize the satire and you don’t know what “The Daily Currant” is, why would you assume that a site that you’ve never heard of is a reputable news source?

  • BlueSkyWhit

People – breathe. This is satire – Chris Hayes didn’t say ANY OF THIS!

  • robert wood

Send him to the front lines, let him cry for those he is disgusted with and about to protect him when the lead starts to fly. Wanna bet his tune will change?

  • abner68

You’re not worthy to lick my nutsack…go do some dishes or something…

  • abner68

What the f**k ever, shotgun285…I’ve really grown weary of this discussion and of listening to all of you self righteous military fucks prattle on about how I’m less of a human being or inferior because I didn’t serve in the military or how you same a**holes claim to be the purveyors of freedom and liberty, yet keep telling me to kill myself and my family..I’m sure the United States would be in utter ruins if all of YOU hadn’t served…I’m done here, but, by all means, please continue your military circle jerk in my absence…

  • Fred Young

Military Veterans are better than you. The majority of them have accomplished more in four years than you will in your entire life. The only reason you are running off at the mouth right now is because you are sitting comfortably in your own home, and you don’t have to look any of us in the eye and talk all that trash.

  • Fred Young

    Amen.

  • Fred Young

And apparently to heat up a debate or two

  • Trevor

I don’t believe anyone said we are better than you. However you should have at least some basic form of respect. Apparently your father did not teach the most basic of life lessons as he was railing you from behind. Thus being the golden rule of course. I see why military personnel have so eagerly cast aside your idiotic opinion as it lacks the key element of respect. Always respect your enemy no matter how small. Personally I think a service member banged out your high school sweetheart while you were away at bible camp but that’s just me. Let by gones be by gones

  • Edohiguma

He tried to be funny, along the lines of Life of Brian (“What have the Romans ever done for us?”), but he’s not a comedic genius like the Monty Pythons gang and he’s a terrible actor, so it didn’t really work out as planned, which isn’t really a surprise.

I mean, he works for MSNBC, if he was really good at something, he’d not be part of the MSM zombies. Plus, he’s American. Sarcastic satire doesn’t work if you’re American. You gotta be Brit for that, or at least think in Monty Python/Blackadder type black humor, and most Americans can’t do that, including him. His poor delivery of this and the reactions to it both prove it without a doubt.

  • Edohiguma

Really? Opening a business based on a new age/pseudo-intellectual lunacy which has nothing to do with fact and science but only with hysteric screaming and emotional hyperbole is a heroic act of courage?

You gotta be American “progressive” to think that. Or a German “liberal”. It’s pretty much on the same level of “fail” and “stupid”.

  • Lonely Sailor

Someone needs to broaden their horizons. All that time in “classrooms” and coffee shops learning about vegan food, GMO, and other such things still betrays you of a chance to gain another PERSPECTIVE, and look at places around the world filled with people who hate us for who and what we are. Safety should be more recognized for the valid concern it is in these “classrooms”. Our veterans, men and women who wear our nation’s cloth, keep us safe by tying up those villians, thus allowing those “classrooms” to exist. They are called heros because thats what they are, and that’s what they DESERVE.

  • John Wagz

Any time he would like I will get him a plane ticket out of this country. This guy is a total jerk.

  • Desparado

    Here here!

  • Gades

This is satire people…dont get your panties in a bunch

  • Clive

It’s difficult to give unwavering respect to people who think you’re less of a human being if you were unable or unwilling to serve. I respect your uniform. You, as a person, will have to earn my respect just like everyone else.

Save the “service personnel don’t say that kind of stuff” nonsense. I see active and retired personnel saying how they want to choke all civilians, how civilians shouldn’t be allowed to vote, how civilians are useless, how civilians don’t respect you enough even though you’re treated like heroes and have two national holidays, etc. on a daily basis on social media sites.

  • Lisa Havner

This is a satire site genius. He did not say that

  • Lisa Havner

This is a satire website. He did not say that. US army veteran

  • Lisa Havner

I am a veteran and I agree with you. Many of us join for a variety of reasons. Some in the military are bad apples just like other professions. I’ve been to Iraq. Didn’t agree with it. I wasn’t a hero. I did my job. To say everyone that is a veteran is a hero is wrong. There can be heroes in many walks of life. I respect them. My husband, brother, father and father in law are vets. People do die, but I think it’s sometimes the smaller things they did while serving that would make them a hero as well. I’ve heard active duty say such disgusting things about this president. Racist things. They are no hero just because they are in the military.

  • Lisa Havner

I’m a veteran. I can tell you many of us sign up for the GI bill or to get away from dysfunctional homes, etc. There are many reasons. None of them are necessarily bad. I do not think that we are doing anything for our “freedom” when invading a country for no reason. Many of us do our jobs just like in the civilian world. I think it’s a shame our government sends soldiers to their deaths unnecessarily. Perhaps if they sent their own children, they would not rush to war. Veterans deserve respect, yes, but everyone who is a vet is not a hero.

  • Lisa Havner

This is a satire website. I am a veteran and you are wrong to tell someone they are inferior just because of his statement. Just because you were in the military doesn’t make you a hero. US army veteran. My husband, brother, father and father in law are vets. Seems to me you have a chip on your shoulder

  • Lisa Havner

Not everyone who joins thinks they are risking their lives or many would not join. And I am a veteran. No one on here has bashed the military that I have seen and this is a satire website

  • Lisa Havner

You are mistaken Fred. I think many of you are taking things way too seriously. I am a veteran and not everyone who has been in the military are heroes and many don’t do it to die for their country, or get disabled invading a country for no reason. Many don’t even see war. You do your daily job just like everyone in the civilian world. And I’ve been to Iraq. I respect many vets because they did die or get injured in the service of their country. Even if their government sends them into bogus wars. But lighten up people. Abner isn’t saying vets are scum. And I know some rotten apples in the military that have not done “more in four years” than someone else. I mean really.

  • fpbiv375

How about instead of patting my own back, I’ll just scotch my balls. Something you are clearly not equipped to do!

  • Lisa Havner

You are wrong for saying that. Everyone who serves in today’s military isn’t necessarily “keeping their family safe” or doing it for “freedom”. To ignore the obvious is wrong. Their are many heroes in the military and civilian world, but not every single person who has served. I’ve been to Iraq. I’d be willing to say that firefighter is more of a hero than many I knew in my unit. To say every vet is a hero just diminishes the word hero. Lisa Havner US army vet.

  • Lisa Havner

You do not do yourself justice by telling Abner that. He has not said vets are disgusting people or to “kill yourself” as you have told him. A true hero wouldn’t have to demand respect. I feel for any parent who has lost their child. Especially in an unnecessary war. We overuse the word hero in this day and time. Sincerely, LIsa Havner US army veteran.

  • Lisa Havner

Today’s veterans aren’t doing anything to protect my freedoms. Sincerely, Lisa Havner US army veteran. I mean really? Invading Iraq did what for my freedom. Abner isn’t disrespecting vets, he is making a valid point. Everyone who has been in the military is not a hero. To say otherwise, diminished the word hero. There are heroes all around us, civilian and military alike

  • Lisa Havner

How do you know abner isn’t in one of those professions you listed. I have known some real scumbags in the army as well as the civilian world. My time in the army wasn’t spent ensuring anyone’s freedom. Lighten up and stop telling people to kill themselves and making a butt out of yourself

  • Lisa Havner

Some of us do it for the GI bill or to get out of the dysfunctional house we live in. Lighten up. Every vet isn’t in for the glory or to “serve”

  • Lisa Havner

Did you not hear Chazmanr? It was a satirical website. He did not say that.

  • Lisa Havner

    apparently they do not

  • Lisa

My father is a HERO! He’s 89 and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He left his family and the comforts of “riding his bike” to fight for our freedom. In Belgium, he was honored, and in our hometown was in a Veteran’s Day parade. What makes you think that your views are correct? Maybe you should leave the country and ride your bike elsewhere!

  • SHOTGUN285

you misunderstood my meaning Lisa. I agree the word “hero” is thrown around far too freely. I don’t consider myself a hero in any way, and the same goes for the majority of people that serve. I’m just an ordinary person that did his duty. My response was geared towards that twit abner that got his panties in a twist because he resents the military. Thanks for your service.

  • SHOTGUN285

no one (at least not me) said anything about harming you or your family. where do you get your paranoia?

  • BronxMets

this didn’t really happen did it? I mean people in this country haven’t got this stupid have they?

  • Scott

Put an X on this guys door so that our soldiers will know not to waste their effort defending him.

  • JqOgershok

Yo Jack, look at my name. There is no “c” in it.

It is not the fault of the readers. These chuckleheads write this drivel for the sole purpose of getting a reaction, so they can giggle. Even worse are the dorks who know whats happening, then poke fun at the duped. It’s far beyond sophomoric. These hints you speak of are not entirely obvious and the articles are never beyond the capabilities of the source. Mark the article as satire, otherwise the author takes on the role of idiot.

  • PROUD AMERICAN!!!

Mr. Chris Hayes: Who do you think you are!?!?!?!? Yes, I understand that these soldiers have given you the freedom to speak your mind. But in the same view this is my freedom of speech as well!!! You are a nitwit saying that we have brain washed our children by making them stand on the side of the road waving American Flags. You had better make sure that your green card hasn’t been revoked because of your STUPID mouth and or brain!!!!!!

  • Ron Hawkins

No, this is on the readers. It’s not a random satirical article on cnn.com or nytimes.com or some other news site. This *entire site* is satire. “Mark the article as satire”? Should The Onion also put “Not True” at the top of all of its articles. Should Jonathan Swift have subtitled “A Modest Proposal,” “Hey folks, I’m just kidding. I don’t really want you to eat poor children”? People have to use some common sense. And even if somebody didn’t recognize the satire, why would they believe something just because it appeared on a website they’ve never heard of? Do they think that everything on the Internet is true? A quick check of the site’s “About” section reveals, “The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper … Q. Are your news stories real? A. No. Our stories are purely fictional.”

  • Brian C Laverenz

    Would SOMEONE SHOOT THIS FU**)).CK!!!!!

  • Sara Lipton

that was a bold move for him to make… lets see how many death threats he can get in 24 hours

  • ThePhdScientist

Or perhaps it’s because tea baggers don’t understand satire? Republicans overwhelmingly like and believe the things coming out of Stephen Colbert’s mouth!

  • Brian Robinson

    You truly are dumb!

  • Brian Robinson

I see, so you did join just for the GI Bill. Enough said. Every time I ran across someone like you in did everything in my power to get them kicked out just so they would lose their GI Bill and keep them from wasting our resources. God I wish you could have been one of them!

  • JqOgershok

Perhaps, ThePhdScientist is making a fallacious argument by lumping everyone into the same category with these statements. Where is the science behind the claims. The evidence is merely antipodal, at best. The pseudonym, ThePhdScientist, could also lead one to a fallacious conclusion based upon the perception the author is making an argument from authority. I can cite a study of psychologists that concludes
“…In decisions ranging from paper reviews to hiring, many social and personality psychologists said that they would discriminate against openly conservative colleagues. The more liberal respondents were, the more they said they would discriminate.”
    See: http://yoelinbar.net/papers/political_diversity.pdf

Additionally, I believe the assessment of Steven Colbert’s followers to be incorrect. From my perspective, he is making fun of those same right wing pundits to whom you disparagingly refer with the label of “tea baggers.” (An
ad hominem attack of the abusive variety) Those same folks, myself included, do not get all wrapped up in his sarcasm. If that equates to liking and believing, then I am indeed confused. I do not like most of what he says, do not regularly view his “report,” and do not believe he speaks with any authority with which I would believe anything he says to be factual or his true opinion on the matter. He is an entertainer.

    But what do I know?

  • Laura Paquian

RELAX people, it’s a joke. It’s satire. Not true. Not what he said, etc. Got it now?

THIS IS SATIRE. You can’t take this article seriously.
Yes, it is based on something that was said, but you need to watch the original clip and create your own thoughts based on that. The majority of this article is made up. Makes for a fun read but is not real.

antipodal? on the opposite side of the Earth? I assume you were trying to say antedotal.

Hey Einstein, maybe if you had the sense to realize this was a joke you would not have volunteered for an optional war that cost us a trillion dollars, thousands of lives and no benefit. You should not be so dumb to give your life to make others rich.

  • JqOgershok

    “anecdotal” is the correct word.

The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper with the stated mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence – which presses forward.

  • Doug Kelly

I served 18 yrs for this piece of crap (I have the right to voice my opinion) to vocalize his feelings. I do not however, have to agree with him, and furthermore I can and will start letter writing campaigns to NBC and MSNBC and call for a boycott of the channel until he is indeed fired and put out on the breadlines where he belongs. him saying his vegan friend is a ‘hero’ because he has a non-GMO bakery is akin to Tom Cruise saying he knows what it’s like to be a US fighting man because of all the “war movies” he has prepped for and starred in. Excuse my language, but I have to call “BS” on this on people.

Lead or follow but get out of the way!

    You’re retarded, this is satire.

  • ThePhdScientist

Is your attempt at pretentiousness supposed to enhance your credibility or make you “sound smart?”

Can you explain to me how this evidence is “antipodal”. (Antipodal = diametrically opposite or situated at the opposite side of the earth or moon).

Here’s the study showing that conservatives enjoy Stephen Colbert:

    http://hij.sagepub.com/content/14/2/212.abstract

“Additionally, there was no significant difference between the groups in thinking Colbert was funny, but conservatives were more likely to report that Colbert only pretends to be joking and genuinely meant what he said while liberals were more likely to report that Colbert used satire and was not serious when offering political statements. Conservatism also significantly predicted perceptions that Colbert disliked liberalism.”

But hey maybe we should just go with your feelings and “beliefs” – why rely on the science, right? Isn’t tea bagger dogma ideology over science and data?

  • MichaelZWilliamson

The Daily Currant is a satire site.

Though I have heard actual things said that were not far off from this.

25 years here. I hope you qualified for a pension even if you didn’t hit 20. That’s a chunk of life.

Actually, it is a joke. The Daily Currant is basically like The Onion, except not clever, funny, or otherwise good for anything except trolling people on Facebook.

Yes, it is the fault of the readers just as it is their fault that they believe everything they see on Facebook, CNN, Rush, Fox News, etc. 21st century Americans are basically stupid.

  • William Harper

Retired USAF here. I don’t have a problem with what he said in the referenced article and agree with it to a certain extent. He didn’t say he hated vets he said he was uncomfortable calling all of us heroes. Most of us don’t consider ourselves heroes and the one that do typically didn’t actually do anything but hide.

Had you taken the time to read I corrected the error. Additionally, you claimed the PhD not I. Iasked for the cite and you proveded it. Again, you resort to name calling while chastizing me for not using science. I cited the science that says liberals are wont to filter their work and conservatives are just in believing they are persecuted.

Do the authors, LaMarre, H. L., Landreville, K. D., and Beam, M. A. use the term “tea bagger” in their study? FYI both studies group the participants based upon the believed political phylosophy and report the beliefs of those sampled.

  • JqOgershok

Do the authors of “The Irony of Satire” use the words “tea bagger” in their study? Are both the study I cited and the one you cited not based upon the self reports of the particpants in the study; self reports of the feelings and beliefs of the participants?

  • JqOgershok

    Or call people names…

  • ThePhdScientist

I’m going to assume you’re someone who is not used to scientific discussions or logically following along in any discussion for that matter. Let me remind you of our conversation thus far…

My first comment was to say that “tea baggers” do not understand satire, which is presumably why you didn’t understand this column – assuming you subscribe to that extremist wing of the Republican party.

I did not chastise you up to then for not using science. But your retort was to cite some study that liberals were “meanies” to conservatives and that academics tended to be liberal. This had nothing to do with whether or not conservatives understand satire, but presumably was offered by you to take a dig at conservatives.

Of course academics are going to be more liberal. And that is unfortunate. It’s unfortunate because today, to be conservative means one has to be AGAINST SCIENCE. You’re only a cool conservative today if you deny climate change! If you say the earth is 6000 years old and man walked with dinosaurs! If you don’t understand satire! It’s pathetic and sad what has happened to our conservative party. There is no room left for legitimate fiscal conservatives! Everyone must now be a complete nutter on all social issues or they’re called a “RINO” or not conservative enough.

So yeah academics are all going to be liberals, because they’re smart intelligent people who believe in science not make believe…

  • ThePhdScientist

What does this have to do with anything?

Do you know how to read the study?

The irony of satire is attempting to understand whether political ideology has an effect on one’s ability to understand satire. (Hint there is a right answer to the question is Stephen Colbert a satirist or not?)

The answer is Stephen Colbert IS A SATIRIST and he is a liberal leaning person. Conservatives apparently have a difficult time understanding this and they believe he dislikes liberals. These are all INCORRECT beliefs and feelings and that is what the study showed…

  • ThePhdScientist

Do you object to this fun little play on tea party? I mean don’t you think Tea Party is pretty ridiculous anyway? Baggers have nothing in common with our early revolutionaries – only in their minds….

  • JqOgershok

I am not a member of the Tea Party but the reaction is to the term which is abusive.

  • JqOgershok

You said: My first comment was to say that “tea baggers” do not understand satire, which is presumably why you didn’t understand this column – assuming you subscribe to that extremist wing of the Republican party. I do not subscribe to the extremist wing of any party.

  • Daniel Farber

He needs a little understanding. After all he was the little guy that ran his mouth off at everyone and wondered why no one liked him. He was beaten often for it and wondered why. He just never got the clue, that people crave peace! Some just lack the verbal skills and need to express them selves in a more direct form of communication. “If you can’t leave me in peace, I will eliminate you.” type of converastion for the slow witted.

  • Vulgivagus Poeta

    Merriam-Webster ~
SATIRE 1 : a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn 2 : trenchant wit, irony, or sarcasm used to expose and discredit vice or folly.

My personal opinion: As Veteran’s Day is presumably set aside as a day to honor all our U.S. military veterans , whether service occurred during peace-time or war-time, here or abroad (as opposed to Memorial Day, which honors those fallen in service of our nation), this article hardly seems to qualify as either a vice or a folly, wherefore, I fail to see the supposed “satire” in this article. It isn’t witty, ironic or necessarily sarcastic, and it is entirely based on an erroneous (non-) event.

    So….
    “Satire?” ….NOT.
    “Fallacious?” ….Yes, definitely fallacious!

  • LibertyChic

Keep drinking the kool aid dude.
I respect your right to free speech, however you are special kind of stupid!

  • David Brookwell

Wow. He’s right — my dad doesn’t want to be called a “hero” for landing on Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944. My father says, “that’s just what we did as citizens of the United States.” But that’s not going to stop me from calling my dad and countless others heroes not just for that day in history but for everyone that’s ever worn an military uniform. I don’t expect MSLSD to fire Chris Hayes. But he should fire himself and go join Chaz at the vegan bakery… and make us all safe. P.S. – Wondering if it could have been the little non-GMO morsels of happiness that made him sick?

  • Diane Rickman Carder

What a narcissist! He compares a vet to a baker and says the baker is the real hero? He is nuts.,Go live somewhere where they do not have freedom and then say you don’t appreciate our vets.

  • ThePhdScientist

Joking about the killings Christians? I supposed if you’re an ideological imbecile you would see it that way…

Does anyone take Fox News seriously? Seems Josh Earnest appropriately does not!

  • ThePhdScientist

Wait wait so a few exceptions makes “my argument fall on its face”. You really don’t understand how the world works do you.

Why do you think it is that only 39% of American’s believe in evolution and significantly more academics (aka people with phd’s do)? Intelligence? Belief in science and scientific inquiry?

**Note because a few people with PhDs are bible thumping creationists does not negate the argument that PhD holders believe in evolution far more than the average American and even more than the average republican**

  • Darin Sunny McCullough

    Imbecile? LOL, ok.

  • ThePhdScientist

    don’t forget ideological! ;-)

Want a TeaBag for this D-Bag..? Unfortunately his freedom allows him the right to say what he wants….agreeable or not…. at least he not hiding behind a group with alternative motives…. the removal of prayer (or as stated Christianity), removal of the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’, or any activity that makes others feel obligated (sorry uncomfortable) to think and act like a good Samaritan…. Instead of the hateful people they have become. I hear people all the time tell me and others look at them they grew up OK….. – Seriously?-

I tell them (YOU) grew up under the old family values and had a chance at being happy… and you’re not…! So ‘you are not OK’…. and I don’t feel you should be making the decision for my children when you cannot even raise your own child to respect you, me, or any other authority….. ((or)) ….Wait…wait… you don’t have children because you don’t like them either….?
2 Shining examples to live by…

  • Quinton Lamar Willis

    I agree with him

  • Daniel Seidenberg, USA, Ret.

I swore to defend our constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Chris’s freedom of speech is therefore defended and sacred, in my view.

  • JqOgershok

You used the wold “all” in your statement: So yeah academics are all going to be liberals, because they’re smart intelligent people who believe in science not make believe…

We are not discussing how the world works. I am pionting out that appearently you do not understand logic. The word “all,” the one I pointed out in the text, as well as none, never, every are used to universally quantify statements. So yes, one exception is sufficient. These are words, that are key words in true/false tests. Many or most was the correct word but since you have no tolerance for others simple errors, which is what caused you to enter this thread (my opinion – jump on the idiot who missed the scarcasm), I was inclined to point out your failing as you did mine for reacting to what I percieved as despicable behavior. I acknowledged my errors. This one is glaring.

The ad hominium attacks also are not consistant with logic either. I would have expected a person with a PhD to not resort to name calling.

Go ahead and get the last word but I am done and will not respond further.

  • Joshua A Palyo

Tough words from a Nancy boy that didn’t have the guts to serve.

  • watchpocket

    Bravo Chris!

  • BeevaloBill

Chris Hayes is an infantile hater …. and a moron. I have watched his show and what passes for logic is about 3rd grade level.

  • Frank Schiffel

Yup no better than everybody else. This was started as a day to remember the war to end all wars. The sacrifices they made. Now its a reason to shop.

  • Frank Schiffel

For all the respect veterans get, it wasn’t from the used car salesmen at the base gates that sold them cars at crappy deals knowing uncle sugar would ensure snuffie would pay….

  • Frank Schiffel

The real heroes never say a word about what they did. non vets never get this.

  • Frank Schiffel

thanks m’am. sorry for all the old troglodyte remarks in the dark ages when women in the service were trail blazers.

  • Frank Schiffel

I’d argue respect was up there until 67 or so. by 68 it went downhill for a lot of reasons, by the 70s, was rock bottom. took a long time to dig out of that hole. Had a lot to do with leadership and politicians.

  • Jeremiah Ellison

I thought he was auditioning as a stand-up comic.

“besides defeating Nazism, ending the Holocaust, stopping genocide in
Kosovo, protecting global trade from piracy, ending communism, ending
slavery, securing our independence, killing Osama Bin Laden and
distributing aid abroad after natural disasters…” WHAT HAVE THE ROMANS EVER DONE for US?

And operating a vegan, non-gmo, gluten-free bakery takes a LOT of courage. I don’t think I would have the balls to do it… after consuming that much soy.

He may have been a professional journalist, but he obviously didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express before recording that segment.

  • Mike Morgan

Apparently Mr Hayes’s thought processes go no further than his own appetites. May the Lord rebuke him.

  • Trevor

Well while you were getting dicked down on that FOB of yours for the GI Bill, I had the privilage of fighting along our nations best. To claim the word hero is over used is disgusting when you clearly have no idea what the other half of the service members you served with went through. Now please hop into your prius, smash down the prissy pedal and take yourself and Abner straight into 500lbs of HME. Thanks!

  • Bruce Krall

This idiot needs to be given a rifle and sent to Afghanistan!!! If it weren’t for all the Veterans in this country, you wouldn’t be able to “speak the truth” as you put it!! Mr. Hayes, you’re just an ungrateful, liberal asshole!!!

  • foozy

Well, apparently many of the commentators on this article have the stupids to think this article is actually real.

This article, and every single article on this site, is a joke, made-up, fictional, a story, not true, didn’t happen, satire, intentionally false, not real, elaborate exageration beyond the point of credulity, mocking, imaginary…

  • foozy

“I thought he was auditioning as a stand-up comic.”

Well, Chris Hayes isn’t, but the author of this fictional satirical news article written for the sake of humor might be. I see you recognize the a few of the key give away jokes.

  • foozy

Well, folks can no longer claim that The Currant just makes up false stories about conservatives just to make conservatives look bad. Here they made up a false story about a liberal to make a liberal look bad. In both cases the idea is humor and in both cases the story is meant to be a joke.

  • Eric Hogue

And in all cases you’ll get some idiots that think it’s true.

  • Been there Done that

What a moron, without the vet he would have no voice to think or say anything. Too bad he couldn’t take the place of my fallen brothers.

  • BJC

He isn’t a MAN, he is a hand flapping pajammie boy, he would hide and cry if someone got in his face. I pity his wife she is being ripped off marrying a closet boy

  • Smedley Butler

As a disabled combat veteran I can say unequivocally; If you joined the military and fought for “freedom,” you’re not a hero…you’re gullible. Had these men and women really been fighting for “freedom” decade after decade, Americans would be more free today than in decades past. Either American service men and women are completely incompetent as evidenced by the fact that Americans are consistently loosing that which it is claimed these folks are fighting for, or, they’re not fighting for freedom at all – they’re fighting for politicians and everyone knows that the vast majority of politicians are corrupt, self-serving sociopaths. Tell me again…how does being paid to do the bidding of sociopaths make one a hero? Anyone who has fought and died for a politician has wasted their life.

  • melsbabysis

Sorry Chris, this is not “truth”, this is your warped, perversion of the truth. I don’t know why you’re so disgruntled, and don’t really care. I hope I never run into you, because if I do, you will be picking ALL of your teeth up off the ground you sick, twisted coward. Bad, bad choice to piss off a Marine Mom.

  • billiegirl

the problem is that these young men and women aren’t told the truth when they sign on, they are told they are fighting for our freedom and all that business, the commercials, the recruiters, etc. it’s all a big lie and they don’t find out the truth until it’s too late, if they ever do realize what they are really doing out there…their hearts are in the right place (most of them) but they are being used and lied to

  • JoAnn Dwyer

  • ThePhdScientist

You realize this post is 9 months old? But alas, the tea party still spews the same garbage. A gang of >90% white folks who pretend to be for small government. Unless of course it comes to a woman’s right to choose an abortion, a gay couple’s right to marry, a black person’s right to vote. Yes the “small government” conservatives may have started out libertarian and then got hijacked by the moral majority wannabes…
